"Have you seen the Beekeeper on Amazon Prime starring Jason Statham" This is the question our Marketing Manager, Madeline asked me on a call recently. Coincidentally, I had seen the movie and thought it was really good because 1.) I am a sucker for action movies, and 2.) Jason Statham rarely disappoints. As a big fan of action movies or Jason Statham or both, I would highly recommend this one. Madeline then pointed out (and Spoiler Alert: what is the whole premise of the movie) is that Beekeepers protect the hive from baddies. Then she pointed out that at CMHWorks we do exactly that by providing Digital Security Services to our hive.
Maybe this seems like a bit of a stretch, so let me draw the lines here. As the plot is described on Wikipedia,
Retired schoolteacher Eloise Parker ... falls for a phishing scam that bankrupts her and steals her life savings, including $2 million from a charity fund she manages. Devastated, she commits suicide.
It's that fine line between scaring people vs helping them see why awareness, and more importantly, changing our behaviors that’s important. While we are not a "super-secret government agency", CMHWorks is the the "mysterious group" that keeps the hive safe. What makes what we do “mysterious” is that the average member of the hive does not understand cybersecurity.
Don’t "bee" Eloise Parker
Like most hacking victims, Eloise was unaware of the risks she faced. We have seen an alarming increase in effective hacks on small businesses in recent weeks. And while some of our hive is doing the right thing and not experiencing these hacks, some are not. And when they are not, we cannot protect them. Sadly, we get called to the crime scene after the fact, and either help clean up the dead bodies, or advise on how to avoid the crime from happening again. But without proactive protection, these crimes will keep happening, and be potentially more devastating.
"Bee" the Change You Want to See
Obviously, doing the same thing and expecting different results will not change anything. So if you have experienced hacks, you have received your wake-up call. If you haven’t been hacked recently, don’t assume you are safe. Whether you choose to let CMHWorks be your “Beekeepers” someone else, or you are qualified to do it yourself, ask yourself why you haven’t done it yet, and remove the obstacles preventing you from affecting the change. I think we can all agree that we don’t want to be "Eloise".
